At least three people have called to report the sign war between Abundant Life Christian Center and Heartbreaker’s Gentlemen’s Club & Restaurant is back on.
Well, maybe a “sign war” is a bit strong. But it’s definitely edgy on the part of Abundant Life.
Abundant Life has had a billboard near Heartbreaker’s, 3200 Interstate 45 S., for 15 years. For years, the sign’s message was: “Jesus Heals the Broken Hearted.” It’s inspired by Luke 4:18.
But the sign disappeared for a year so the church could promote some of its camp meetings on the billboard.
I’m not one to judge what people do in their spare time. But every time I see that sign, I wonder whether it’s ever worked. Did it ever stop someone from entering the strip club? Today, after all these years, I finally called Abundant Life and asked.
Catherine Rudolph, a minister on the staff, said the sign does work. Its message has steered people to services, she said.
“On numerous occasions people have come into the church after they drove by it,” Rudolph said. “They said it made them think.”
But there’s something else about the sign. Some people find it comfortingly amusing and miss it when it isn’t there.
“The billboard isn’t there all the time, but it’s a hoot when it is,” one reader e-mailed to say.
What is it that we like about the sign? Does it say a lot about life in a small town? Do we like the refreshing boldness of the church?
Are you glad the sign is back?

I live in Tucson Arizona but I am in Houston Tx often and I LOVE that billboard!!! I am a Pastor in Tucson and I would love to put a billboard like that over one of our "establishments" that would encourage people about just ONE of the MANY things that BREAK-HEARTS, Lives and marriages! By the way...Abundant Life is an AMAZING CHURCH and you should check it out!!! Pastor Scotty :) — By Scotty Gurule

I have been a member of ALCC for 16 years and we have the greatest Pastor and church family on the planet! If you think the billboard is extreme, you should have lived when Jesus did and you would have seen that He used many extreme measures to reach people and change their lives. For example, He made a burning bush speak and not be consumed by fire, He had a donkey actually talk to its abusive owner, He made a blind man see by spitting in the dirt and making new eyes for him, He parted a whole sea in order for a group of people to pass through safely, He walked on the water, He healed lepers, and ultimately...He hung on a cross and died for each and every person on this planet....whether you are a stripper, a strip club attender, an atheist, a Muslim, a woman, a man, a sinner, a saint....EVERYONE was on His mind! And that is also true of ALCC....EVERYONE is welcomed, received, loved, touched, healed, taught, and changed! But the choice to attend either place is your choice! That's what is SO GREAT about our God....He is definitely a gentleman and He loves YOU...whoever & whatever you are!! WAY TO GO PASTOR....WE LOVE YOU AND YOUR UNCOMPROMISING STAND ON THE WORD OF GOD & YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS!! — By Terri Howard

Does the sign work? I believe that was the question asked. Please do not dummy down the gospel of Jesus Christ. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? I am member of ALCC, I am one of those that family, ex-church members and everyone you could imagine said "everyone that goes to that church ends up in a ditch, heartbroken and broke". Well I AM ONE of THOSE PEOPLE that the members of ALCC came down in the ditch and pulled out. I was heartbroken, in a failed marriage and had a 357 magnum to my head and pulled the trigger. It is by the grace of God I was given another chance to obey and submit to the uncompromised Word of God. The pastors and staff of ALCC love people enough to do just that, speak the Word of God. THAT is what works, and how shall they hear lest the preacher preach it. Does it work? I went from living in a two bedroom, two bath mobil home with three daughters for 15 years to a million dollar home. Those 15 years in the mobil home was largely due to my ignorance, but I knew enough to keep my daughters in Abundant Life Christian School as well as the church. Please do not dummy it down to money either, Obedience is better than sacrifice. This is not a battle of heartbreakers and ALCC. THIS IS A BATTLE OVER SOULS, a true heaven or hell issue. And even then, Heaven is not Enough! God wants Heaven on earth, Now. So does it work? What ALCC is teaching and preaching in word and deed (Jesus) saved my life. Ask my daughters that were headed down the same road as their dad- The oldest is now in her second year at TCU and the middle daughter was just today accepted to TCU (the first of my family to go to college). The middle daughter battled with thoughts of suicide and at one point thought she could amount to no more than a stripper at heartbreakers. If it were not for Pastor Hallam and the staff of ALCC and Abundant Life Christian School standing in the gap for me when I was so deceived, my whole generation would have been lost. That is what happens at ALCC, the hearts of a generation are changed -All people are truly loved, the sin is the abomination, not the people, Out of one blood God created all nations of men. I beg you to come to the church and judge for yourselves. Yes I said judge, not condemn. We are called to judge a tree by the fruit, we are fruit inspectors, please, I beg you, come inspect the fruit of ALCC. — By Randy Narvaez

I live in Dickinson and every time I exit the freeway and see the sign it makes me chuckle. I happen to know first hand what and who ALCC stands for. I have attended for over 15 years. ALCC is a Church of love and healing. I have seen countless people come into the Church, receive Salvation, receive healing, and receive the Word of God. I have had the good fortune of being raised in the Church. I have been around some tremendous men of God over the years. Pastor Hallam stands alone in many respects. I have had the opportunity to experience first hand the integrity and sincerety of Pastor Hallam and his staff. His heart is and always has been totally surrendered to Jesus Christ. He has trained and equipped thousands of people in the gospel. There are leaders all across the world that have been blessed by his drive and determination to further God's Kingdom. ALCC has been a blessing to my family and I for many years. I attended Abundant Life School of Ministry ten years ago and it literally changed my life. That is the effect of the Word of God being preached without compromise, it changes lives. May God forever bless Pastor Hallam, his family, and the Church forever. — By Don Lee
